Community Development

The Community Development Project is supported by the Australian Government through the Australian NGO Cooperation Program (ANCP) and Quaker Service Australia, and Bread for the World, and is all about the implementation and maintenance of activities which enable families in Prek Chrey commune to establish stable economic livelihoods. These activities are based on the principles of gender equality, health and sustainability, which are the prerequisites for the achievement of the villagers’ full economic potential.

With the guidance and support of KCD, the villagers run a Cow Bank, a Rice Bank and a Saving & Credit Group under the responsibility of the “Prek Chrey Community for Development” (PCD) . While every family is eligible to be a member of this community, only women have the right to act as a representative for their family, which, supplemented by KCD’s workshops on gender equality, has largely contributed to the empowerment of women in the commune as well as to the respect and support they receive from male villagers, most notably from their husbands.

Due to workshops organized by KCD, members of PCD practice organic farming methods and the System of Rice Intensification (SRI). KCD’s capacity building measures also include workshops about livestock farming and how to recognize and cure common animal diseases. Another important part of the Community Development Project is our WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) program.
