KCD’s response to COVID-19

Due to the situation with COVID-19 in Cambodia and for safety reasons, from 23.03.2020 KCD has switched the office staff from Phnom Penh to work from home.

We have called all our Phnom Penh staff back from the field in order to avoid any kind of misunderstanding, canceled all the activities that require numbered participants and are now revising our strategies to respond to the situation.

We urge all our staff, beneficiaries, stakeholders and partners to stay safe and take measures to prevent the spread of infection.

We are deeply concerned about the spread of fake news about the virus in social networks, therefore, we have decided to take action to provide true information to everyone interested. Please find time to check and subscribe to our Facebook page to access the accurate information and latest updates about our work.

Keep Calm and Stay Safe!

KCD team.

From Child Club to future teacher. Story of Leaknak…

March 2018: Leaknak Phat (orange T-shirt), Child Club Vice-Chairman during International Women’s Day in Prek Chrey

Six years ago, a 13-year-old girl member of Prek Chrey Child Club named Leaknak Phat became a “small teacher”. From Monday to Saturday, she was collecting 5-12 years old children who had to drop-out from school. Around 15-20 children were coming to her grandmother’s shopping stall or the bottom of her family’s house every day. She was teaching them Khmer, Mathematics, and basic English with the educational materials provided by KCD.

She is the eldest daughter among three daughter siblings in her family, her farther passed away in 2018, now she lives with her mother and siblings in Prek Chrey Village, near the border between Cambodia and Vietnam, the target area of KCD. Her mother makes a living working as a farmer and sometime selling cakes, food and drinks at Prek Chrey school to support the family.

Leaknak is now 19 years old, the former Vice-Chairman the Child Club (2017-2018). She passed the National High School Diploma Examination in 2019 and started her University life in Phnom Penh. She has also passed the Primary School Teacher examination in her home village in the same year and now is getting ready to become a teacher. Read more “From Child Club to future teacher. Say Visal – KCD Project Officer in Germany

Experience exchange is becoming more and more important in contemporary NGO world. Sharing ideas and experiences, conducting study visits and work exchanges – all of these is a powerful tool for young professionals to increase and improve their capacities as well as for experienced specialists to share their knowledge and experience.

Today we are bringing you a remarkable example of KCD’s young professional – Say Visal, a former Child Rights Project Officer, who is doing his experience exchange placement in Germany for already 4 months, being a part of the volunteer exchange program sponsored by Bread for the World.

Forum Theatre

What is Forum Theater?

You might have probably noticed that in our articles we refer to Forum Theater (FT) as one of the primary methods for our project work. You would probably wonder what FT is and how does it work? Today we want to talk more about FT, its history, methodology and how it is implemented by KCD.

In a nutshell, Forum Theater, also known as “Theater of the Oppressed” is a type of theater that relates to encouraging the audience to engage and influence the performance on stage, thus becoming “spect-actors” with a power to stop and change the performance. The spect-actors can either suggest different actions to the actors, or come on stage themselves to become a part of the drama and perform they own solutions to the situation. Issues dealt with in FT are often related to areas of social justice with aims to explore solutions to oppression featured in the performance.
