Niwano Peace Foundation – KCD’s new partner

We are pleased to announce that KCD was one of the 11 successful organisations selected by the Niwano Peace Foundation (NPF) among the 217 applicants for receiving a grant for grass-roots activity in a local community. Thanks to support from NPF, we will conduct an Interethnic Peace Camp for young peace leaders from our target communities in September-October this year. Stay tuned with our social media to receive updates about this and other activities.

We are very thankful to NPF for their trust and are looking forward to a successful partnership.

Peace

Peace: something we wish everyone knew

As our mission says, inter-ethnic peace is a cross-cutting value that we mainstream through all our projects. Sometimes people ask us, why we focus on peace? Isn’t there already peace in Cambodia, since the war was finished many years ago?

In this article, we will have a deeper glance at the nature of peace and violence and illustrate the importance of working towards positive peace not only in Cambodia but in every country in the world.

COVID-19 response: Part 1. Hygiene and awareness.

The year 2020 has brought new challenges to humanity. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected all the spheres of human lives. Even though the situation in Cambodia is relatively safe, the country has also suffered from the virus. It is especially visible in rural communities where people have limited opportunities for access to information and income generation. On 6th June we went to our target area in Prek Chrey commune to speak with KCD field staff and some beneficiaries to reflect on our activities related to response to COVID-19. What is Forum Theater?

You might have probably noticed that in our articles we refer to Forum Theater (FT) as one of the primary methods for our project work. You would probably wonder what FT is and how does it work? Today we want to talk more about FT, its history, methodology and how it is implemented by KCD.

In a nutshell, Forum Theater, also known as “Theater of the Oppressed” is a type of theater that relates to encouraging the audience to engage and influence the performance on stage, thus becoming “spect-actors” with a power to stop and change the performance. The spect-actors can either suggest different actions to the actors, or come on stage themselves to become a part of the drama and perform they own solutions to the situation. Issues dealt with in FT are often related to areas of social justice with aims to explore solutions to oppression featured in the performance.

Get out of your comfort zone to achieve more!

On 18-20th September KCD team has traveled from our cosy Phnom Penh office to Jombok Hoas Training Centre Resort. This was not just a regular teambuilding trip, our goal was to see, how far can we go beyond ourselves.

As you might probably know, KCD is using Forum Theater Methodology in its project activities. Training and implementing Forum Theater definitely requires a certain level of professionalism. Funny enough, no one of us has professional theater background. Thus, it might seem very challenging for our staff to use the method that we have never studied at university.

But life itself is a challenge and as NGO workers we should take it for granted. Every time, one of is using Forum Theater in their work activities, it is a step out of their comfort zone. So we have decided to challenge ourselves even more and to see, how far can we go out of our comfort zone. Read more “Get out of your comfort zone to achieve more!” →

Theater Training with Joanna Lewicka

In the end of April and first weeks of May KCD had a pleasure to host an old friend of our Organization – Joanna Lewicka – a professional theater director from Poland and Germany.
This is already 5th time Joanna is coming to Cambodia. Every visit she is providing valuable Forum Theater training to KCD staff and target groups. This time Joanna has conducted two 3-days training sessions: one for KCD staff and one for Forum Theater Group members who traveled from Prek Chrey to Phnom Penh.

During the first training session for KCD staff Joanna went beyond the borders of Forum Theater and encouraged us to learn and use the full spectrum of theater tools, such as Multimedia, Masks, Shadows and Puppets.
